Useful Links

So, I work with a lot of different softwares, and one thing I have learned is that there are lots of software that are very useful for niche things. Industry standards are nice and all, but the thing about industry is it's about the money. And I ain't about the money - not least cause I have none.

Below I list a bunch of my favorite softwares, most of whom are free, that I use. I list the obivous ones for fun, but I also list more obscure ones that fly under the radar that I strongly suggest you look into. You should use them too!

Main Softwares I use

  • Unreal Best game engine on the planet
  • Blender you can pay a minimum of 300 dollars annually to 3d animate in Maya, or you could do it for free.
  • Maya well to be fair Maya does have great plugins as it's industry standard - so too bad you your gonna have to pay if you want a job. I mean it's not like your spending $100,000+ on tuition to waffle over what software you use as you don't know what you want to do with your life right?
  • Gimp Yes its not photoshop - its free photoshop. I know it's not easy to use, I don't use it for drawing or painting due to its cumbersomeness. But its free photoshop, I don't want to hear any complaints.
  • DaVinci Resolve is the best video editor for free - though below I mention an alternative I like for other uses.
  • OBS for recording

Cool Softwares I use that I think go Under the radar

  • Krita - great drawing software.
  • Inkscape - good vector based drawing software. I would say a bit cumbersome to use, but gets teh job done.
  • Piskel - awesome, simple web app for pixel sprite creation.
  • 4kDownload - an app to download youtube/online videos. Its safe but I don't like the presentation, it sometimes feels illegal.
  • Speaking of this, BOOKMARK this: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/url. Virus Total is a site hosted by google that can scan small files and any website link for malicious elements. Use this whenever you feel unsafe surfing for links and software. Also do your research but this is a great confirmation
  • Shotcut - greate video editing software. I really like this because it's interface to me is simpler that DaVinci, with less tabs to pan through to export a video. For quick piece togeathers that don't need a lot of effects, this is for you. Plus is supports some formats, like .Wav, that Da Vinci can't export.
  • Draw io - use this for making simple graphs of processes. Want to show OOP class relationships? or a specific life cycle of something? use this.
  • ShareX - Forget normal screenshots, this is MUCH MUCH better. so much more functionality. includes videos and gifs, and photo editing on the spot.
  • Rapid Environment Editor  - use this to more easily edit environment variables. This improves the interface and can tell you more info like what paths are bad.
  • Process Explorer - Imagine the task manager, but not bad. This is that. From Microsoft
  • Nicepage - I hate website makers. Nicepage also sucks, but for 60 (now 70) dollars I actually got what I wanted - an application that builds a website and exports the html for me to do what I want with. You buy a subscription for a year, and you keep the software indefinitely without updates after it ends. You don't have to keep paying to have access to the version you currently have - the subscription simply entitles you to new updates (and I think like 2 features get turned off).
